Boundary disputes

I always advise that boundary disputes are best avoided – they can be costly, hugely stressful and they can cause immense and lasting ill feeling between neighbours. However, even with the best intentions, it is not always possible to avoid a dispute arising and, if you find yourself in such a situation, it is best to take professional advice that can help resolve it sooner and can help take away as much of the stress as possible.

If you are unlucky enough to find yourself embroiled in a dispute, a Chartered Surveyor is well placed to advise and can provide a variety of technical services that will facilitate a resolution. These include –

Research – gathering evidence that points towards the location of the boundary, including legal documents, mapping and photographic evidence.

Surveys – a surveyor can visit the site and carry out an accurate and detailed survey of the boundary.

Analysing the evidence – a surveyor with the necessary experience and expertise can interpret the evidence available.

Documentation – producing detailed plans and reports that assist in resolving the dispute.

Mediation services – a surveyor can act for both parties and help settle a dispute amicably.

Expert witness services – surveyors can provide expert witness reports or can act as single joint experts during litigation or alternative dispute resolution.
